I unpacked the box today, throwing paper all around.
The gift was unrevealed.
I looked through the paper, did I miss it?
But there in the corner was the cube, hidden from view.
I inspected the sides, all square and even as such.
No buttons, no cords, no lights, no markings — just a cube with six equal sides.
Thanks for the paperweight.
I smiled through my bangs at you.
You smiled back.
“It’s more than a cube, silly,”
You said, toying with me.
I searched it more, felt its weight in my hand.
“What is it?” I asked.
“It’s everything you ever wanted,” you replied.
And so I sat it on my shelf, in my room.
What did that even mean?”
Was it a clue? A side comment?
The cube stared back at me.
It watched me sleep.
It watched me wake up.
It was a witness
All that I ever wanted,
Defined and undefined.
An eternal witness,
Until one day it would reveal itself
Like a surprise.
